I'm looking into ways in which local communities can use street markets, fairs, festivals , carnivals and the like to stimulate regeneration. If anyone has any ideas, links or references they can point me to I would be very grateful.
The conventional wisdom is that trade in conventional shops goes up on market day, but I've never seen a rigorous study. If that is true does it apply to book fairs, antiques markets and carnivals?
I'm particularly interested in measuring the economic impact of these events, although impact on community or environment is also relevant. I know about the recent study of the economic impact of the Notting Hill Carnival, but that is very much larger than anything I am looking at.
