Nehemiah Scudder

bushI'm sure I'm not alone, but why do I keep thinking of Nehemiah Scudder every time I see this man's face?

I'm reading about the DVD "George w. Bush: Faith in the White House" and I can't help but agree. The first person that popped into my mind was Nehemiah Scudder of "Logic of Empire" and "If this Goes On."

You're definitely not alone on this one. A friend and I were discussing the election during a phone conversation last night and he said the same thing. And I had to agree with him, as I had been thinking along the same lines, just hadn't gotten around to putting a name to it.

Bush reminds me of a statement a friend of mine once made: The man to fear the most is the one who begins a statement with some version of "God told me that ...."

He's not bright enough to be Scudder, but the intent seems to be there. Actually I'd put old George somewhere between Mussolini and the last Kaiser--bombastic with lots of pretty uniforms and ready to lie his way into useless wars. Hopefully we're not living in Germany 1918 or even Italy 1938!

I had a similar worry recently and began writing a post, "Could the United States become a theocracy? Then today (Googling Scudder and preparing to post) I found your blog. I like what you've got going on here!

In reviewing (Midwestbookreview.com, Jan 2007), Variable Star, by Spider Robinson, based on an outline by Robert Heinlein, I wrote, "Robinson stops short of equating Scudder with George W. Bush..." I am delighted to find that others also see Bush as the Scudder prototype.
